First of all, determine what items you have that might require specialized equipment or handling. These include any items that are very heavy, very large, very fragile, very expensive, unwieldy, etc.
Examples of very heavy and large items are large safes, gun safes, pianos (upright, baby grand, and grand), hot tubs, pool tables and other such items.
Fragile items include paintings with or without glass, vases, statues, electronic items (such as television sets and computers), and so forth.
Glass furniture or desks with glass tops must be handled very carefully, so we need to know about these in advance. In addition to being concerned about the item itself, we must also consider the safety of anyone handling such items.
Note that the above lists are not comprehensive and there are other items that might require special handling. If you have any doubts about an item, please ask us.
We need to know these types of things in advance so that we can provide the necessary equipment (a hot tub might require two pallet jacks and some 4’ x 8’ plywood boards plus extra straps and a larger crew, whereas a baby grand or grand piano would require a piano board and some tools to remove the legs and pedal board, etc.).
Also let us know how many steps we will have to go down/up with your items, and also if the stairways are steep, narrow, and how many landings there are. This will help us to know what to bring to get your items safely inside the moving van.
Once inside the moving van, your special items will be given extra padding and then secured to an inside wall with special moving straps or ropes to keep the item from shifting or bumping into other items. This will ensure that your piano, statue, or other prized item will get to its destination safely.
