There are many items that are illegal to ship, even within state boundaries on very short moves. These items you must take yourselves or dispose of legally and safely.
We cannot ship flammables. This includes not only containers of gasoline and other fuels (including propane tanks, etc.), but also cans of paint, paint thinner, and other such items, whether opened or unopened. This includes spray paint as well as paint to be applied with brushes.
Other items that come under this heading are things such as carburetor cleaner, de-icers, and anything that contains flammable or explosive materials.
If you have any equipment that has fuel tanks on it, please make certain that the tanks are empty of fuel before having us take it. For anything that has propane tanks, such as an outdoor grill, please remove the tank and take it with you to your destination in your own vehicle.
Other types of hazardous materials can often be found under kitchen or bathroom sinks, or in laundry rooms. These include things such as alcohol, drain cleaners, chlorine based cleaners or bleach (which, if they mix with caustic things such as toilet cleaners or drain cleaners, can create chlorine gas, which is a lethal gas), and so forth. You might want to carefully place these items in cardboard boxes and place them in the trunk of your car for transport to your new destination.
We cannot take explosives. This would include many types of fireworks, but other items might also be classified as explosive. You would have to take these items with you or dispose of them in a legal and safe manner.
P. S. Fragile items are best carried in the back seat of your own vehicle
For instance, if you had a crystal vase, it might be best to wrap it in a layer of bubble wrap, put a moving pad around it, and then put it in a safe place in the back seat or trunk of your car.
If you want to save some money or you just like to “do it yourself”, you can use our “Labor Only” option. With this option, you can use your own truck or a rental vehicle, and our moving crew will package and load your items, or you can package all or some of the items and our crew will load your vehicle.
Be certain that the vehicle you have selected is large enough. If your goods won’t fit in the vehicle, you will almost certainly have to book your move for another day, as it will likely be impossible to find another vehicle the same day. At the end of the month or the end of the semester – when most moves take place -- vehicle rental agencies are usually booked solid. This could end up being extremely costly, especially if you have to be out of your home or apartment that day. So be certain that any vehicle you plan on using for your Labor Only move can accommodate all of your items.
Please let our movers know about any special items that you have that you would like to move, such as pianos, safes, gun vaults, pool tables, flat screen TVs, etc., so that they can make the necessary preparations to handle these items.
Another way to save money is to have all beds disassembled, and to remove all items from all drawers (clothing might be o.k. since it is light and not fragile).
Also, make certain that you have enough rope and ratchet straps to tie down large furniture and other such items, which will help to prevent them from bumping into other items during transit. Also be certain to include enough blankets to drape around furniture to prevent scrapes and scratches.
If you are going to package items yourself, be certain that fragile items are appropriately wrapped and placed in their boxes. Fragile items that might be safe in storage could easily break in transit, even on well maintained roads.
Additional charges apply for materials that we provide, such as boxes and tape, shrink wrap, wrapping paper, etc.
A full service move is just that: a move where we provide the truck, we do the packing, and we transport your items to your new location. It’s about as carefree as moving can be.
First, we need to know how many bedrooms you have, whether you have items stored in your attic or in a storage shed (and don’t forget the garage), and what items you have that require special handling. These items can include very large, extremely heavy, or fragile items, and any high value items.
Examples of such items are pianos (upright, grand, or baby grand), other musical instruments, pool tables, gun vaults, safes, paintings or photos with glass, glass tables or desks with glass tops, etc. Knowing this will allow us to bring the appropriate materials and equipment and number of men to transport your goods safely.
Other items that require special care are statues, crystal, sets of china, and antiques. If it’s convenient for you, you might want to wrap things like a crystal vase or an antique breakable (if they’re not too large) and wrap it in a blanket and put it carefully in the back seat of your car and transport it yourself.
Once we have determined the approximate size of your move (in thousands of pounds), we will give an estimate of the time it will take to do your move. For out of state moves, we will need to do an onsite estimate of your goods, so we will need to make arrangements with you as to a convenient time to do this. Since we are federally licensed, bonded, and insured, we can provide this service to you so that you can have peace of mind while we take care of your move.
On the day of your move, a crew leader will call you to finalize details. Please let him know about any restricted access or special parking requirements so he can prepare for these situations. This will save time and money for your move.
You can book your move online, or give us a call at the number listed on this site.
Moving labor represents the majority of the moving expense. However, you should also budget for packing supplies, such as moving boxes and tape, and for additional valuation (moving insurance) as needed. Xpress Movers takes special precautions with delicate or oversized items, such as gun safes, flat screen televisions and chandeliers. Some items often require a custom wooden crate, which will incur an additional fee.
With over 35 (combined) years of experience, our sales team prides themselves on providing the most accurate moving estimates in the industry. Our proprietary sales system ensures that we work closely with every customer to fully understand his/her moving needs and to provide a moving estimate that reflects those needs. Be sure to offer as much information as possible at the time of the estimate - this includes reviewing the inventory for accuracy. Neglecting to mention additional items, or difficult areas of access, at the time of the moving estimate almost always results in unexpected costs for the customer.
We base an estimate for a local move on an hourly rate, which includes the drive time for each leg of the move: from the moving company to your original home, then to your destination, and back again to the moving company.
The best time to move is when it's right for you. However, there are some times of the year that are busier for the moving industry than others. The summer months (May - September) and the end of each month are periods of heavier demand.
